Research Facility: production of tracers for atmospheric chemistry

Responsible: Markus Ammann
PROTRAC
The aim of PROTRAC project is to provide the short-lived radioactive isotopes 13N,11C and 15O to our laboratories for experiments in atmospheric chemistry. To study interactions between gas molecules and surface we use highly sensitive technique which employes radioactive-labelled molecules. The isotopes are produced by irradiation of a He/O2 carrier gas stream in a target  by a proton beam.
The target is operated in on-line mode, i.e., the carrier gas passes the target continuously for delivery of isotopes to the laboratory. The gas is blown together with tracers of 13NO through a pipe 580 m in length across the Aare bridge into the new research laboratory where experiments are carried out.
